Honoring the Influence of Women at the Nest and Beyond: UIW to Observe Women’s History Month

The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) wouldn't be the proud institution that it is today without the contributions of women. From UIW's founding Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI), educators, leadership, alumni and more, remarkable women have been a foundational influence and remain present in the University's ongoing story.

The month of March is recognized as Women's History Month in the United States and other countries across the globe. This month is dedicated to highlighting the influence women have had throughout history and still have in present times. In observance of Women's History Month, UIW will host several events throughout the month designed to "educate, inspire and empower the next generation of women leaders. From academic lectures to service opportunities, these programs celebrate the enduring impact of women at UIW and beyond" (uiw.edu).

"Women's History Month at UIW is not a new tradition; it is our origin story," expressed Victoria C. Shipley, UIW Women's History Month chair. "In 1869, three women, CCVI Sisters Madeleine, Pierre and Agnes, arrived in San Antonio with nothing but a mission of healing and education. The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word proved that women-led initiatives change the world, and this March, we celebrate that by practicing the very 'Enlightened Action' the Sisters envisioned over 150 years ago. This is our call to action. We encourage all members of our community to get involved as creators, as volunteers and as advocates. Let's celebrate our history by actively contributing to the next chapter of the UIW story."
