Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), graced the inauguration of the 18th International Research Conference (IRC) of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) as the chief guest, today (30 September).

This year's IRC, held under the theme "Bridging Frontiers: Interdisciplinary Research for Sustainable Progress", convened distinguished diplomats, senior officials, academics and international delegates to deliberate on innovative solutions for contemporary global challenges.

Delivering an inspiring address that underscored the pivotal role of the University in national development and security, the Defence Secretary praised KDU for its dual role as both an academic hub and a national think tank. He stressed that in today's world, "Defence, security, technology, environment, health and social equity are no longer separate conversations; they are interconnected imperatives that demand shared wisdom and united action."

Highlighting the enduring vision of General Sir John Kotelawala, he commended the University's legacy of blending military ethos with academic inquiry. He noted that KDU not only equips armed forces with disciplined leadership but also produces advanced research in fields such as medicine, engineering, law and governance, benefiting the nation at large.

Defence Secretary concluded by commending KDU's unwavering commitment to academic excellence, national service, and global responsibility, wishing the conference every success.

Professor Bahadur Singh attended as the Keynote Speaker.
