Public Works Week in Review for July 10, 2025

The Public Works Department is made up of various sub-departments including Fleet, Line Repair, Streets/Stormwater and Traffic, Wastewater, and Water. Each week, over 100 employees are responsible for the maintenance, monitoring, and improvement of existing and new infrastructure across League City which includes everything from roadways and traffic lights to storm drains, sewers, and water production.

Below are some tips and projects they are working on:

McFarland Road Cleanup

Our Public Works Vegetation Management and Stormwater teams are currently mowing, clearing, and grading the North end of McFarland Road near League City Parkway. As new subdivisions continue to develop, our mowing and right-of-way responsibilities expand accordingly.

Before we can incorporate this stretch into our regular maintenance schedule, we must first remove debris such as old tires, concrete, and other discarded materials. Once the area is cleared and the land is properly graded, it will be added to the many rights-of-way we maintain across League City's 53 square miles.

To help deter future illegal dumping, we will install barricades once cleanup and grading are complete.

Right now, our Public Works Vegetation Management team is mowing and cleaning up along McFarland Road. A few years ago, this area between League City and Friendswood was mostly open fields and woods, but it's quickly turning into new neighborhoods.

As these new subdivisions grow, the area we need to take care of is getting bigger too. Before we can add this stretch to our regular mowing schedule, we first have to clear out old tires, concrete, and other junk. Once that's done and the land is leveled, it will join the many other rights-of-way we mow regularly across League City's 53.3 square miles.

Thanks for your patience while we keep our city looking great!

Cement Batch Plant Maintenance - H85 Series Cementech

The Cementech H85 Series Cement Batch Plant is a vital asset in the City of League City's infrastructure development. This high-performance unit is engineered to blend raw materials using advanced technology and precision to produce high-quality cement essential for citywide construction projects.

Routine maintenance of the H85 unit is essential to maintain consistent and efficient cement production. As with all high-use mechanical systems, periodic component failure due to normal wear and tear is expected and must be addressed promptly to minimize downtime. During normal operation, the conveyor belt-a critical component responsible for material transport within the unit-failed, necessitating immediate replacement. The repair process required a complete shutdown of the unit to allow Fleet Maintenance to safely remove and proceed with the installation of the new conveyor belt.

This repair involved:

  • Checking for any damaged to conveyor system.
  • Installation of a new belt assembly.
  • Precise alignment to ensure smooth, reliable operation.
  • Functional test runs to verify operational integrity and system responsiveness.

Additional Preventative Actions

While offline, technicians performed additional system inspection and minor repairs to optimize performance and preempt further disruptions. This included replacement of a water pump belt along with a general condition assessment. Upon completion of all maintenance tasks and successful test operation, the H85 unit was returned to full service. The plant resumed normal operations with restored reliability, supporting ongoing construction and infrastructure efforts throughout the city.
