Eskenazi Health was ranked first in the state for community benefit, a measure of the "extent of hospital investment in free care and community health," according to the Lown Institute, a nonpartisan think tank in Boston that ranks hospital and health systems' social responsibility using over 50 metrics. For this year's Lown Institute Hospitals Index, more than 2,600 hospitals were evaluated.

In addition to community benefit, Eskenazi Health placed first in the state in equity and in avoiding overuse. These categories reflect the organization's commitment to fair treatment of patients and avoidance of tests and procedures that offer little to no clinical benefit. The health system also ranked in the top 25 in community benefit and in avoiding overuse and in the top 30 in equity nationwide.

Additional honors from the Lown Institute include placing in the top five in the state in social responsibility and receiving a grade of A in avoiding overuse, community benefit, equity, inclusivity, pay equity, social responsibility and value.
