The City of West Hollywood and its Women's Advisory Board will present the City's annual celebration of Women's Equality Day, honoring the tenacity and unrelenting spirit of those who worked to secure women's right to vote and recognizing what can be achieved in a democratic society through the collective efforts of people committed to political reform.
The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote, was ratified in 1920; however, voting rights were not fully secured for all women until passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This year's Women's Equality Day celebration will highlight ongoing efforts to achieve full gender equality and encourage community engagement in protecting voting rights and access.
The Women's Equality Day Town Hall will take place on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the West Hollywood City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. The event is free and open to the public. Limited free parking will be available at the adjacent West Hollywood Park 5-story structure.
The Women's Equality Day Town Hall will feature special presentations from leadership organizations highlighting achievements and progress toward gender equality, followed by a panel discussion with voting rights experts about the impact of voter suppression on equal rights and the importance of protecting voting rights and access for all. Voting information, resources, and opportunities for community involvement will also be available.
Guest speakers will include Nabila Dunbar, Chief Program Officer, Fore Women (formerly National Council of Jewish Women|Los Angeles); Emiliana Guereca, Founder, Women's March Foundation; Dr. Ninochka McTaggart, Director, California League of Women Voters; Dr. Ennette Morton, Recruiter, Close the Gap California; Kirsten Schaffer, Chief Executive Officer, Women in Film; Tiffany Siart, Executive Director, California Women's Law Center; Laurice Penny Sommers, Co-President, League of Women Voters of Greater Los Angeles; Martha Y. Zavala, Past President and Director of Voter Services, Pasadena League of Women Voters; and Grayce Zelphin, Senior Staff Attorney, ACLU of Northern California.
Admission is free. RSVPs are encouraged via Eventbrite at https://WeHoWED2026.eventbrite.com. For voter information and details about upcoming elections, visit the City of West Hollywood's Election Information webpage at www.weho.org/elections.
In addition to the Women's Equality Day celebration, the West Hollywood City Council will issue a proclamation in recognition of Women's Equality Day. West Hollywood City Hall and the City's lanterns over Santa Monica Boulevard will be illuminated in purple and yellow, colors associated with the women's suffrage movement.
For more than two decades, the City of West Hollywood has commemorated Women's Equality Day in a variety of ways. The City of West Hollywood was the first city in the nation to declare itself pro-choice and has continually supported state and federal legislation protecting and advancing women's reproductive rights and access to healthcare. The City supports ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment and has a strong record of supporting initiatives that call for equal pay for equal work.
The City's Women's Advisory Board advises the City Council on matters pertaining to women and works to raise awareness about issues affecting women in the community. The Board is involved in a wide range of programming, advocacy efforts, and events that recognize, support, and advance women in the community and gender equality.
