Johnson Demands Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem Follow the Constitution

WASHINGTON, DC-Today, during a House Homeland Security Committee Hearing with the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Kristi Noem, Congresswoman Julie Johnson (TX-32) demanded that Noem follow the Constitution by protecting due process rights as DHS continues deportations.

"I have a lot of concerns about the lack of due process that your agency has been affording people in this country," Johnson said to Noem. "In Texas, for example, you had rounded up 171 individuals, were preparing to deport them, and it wasn't until the Supreme Court issued an opinion that that was unconstitutional and that their due process rights were being violated, did your agency actually stop and adhere to the Supreme Court's opinion."

Johnson also questioned Noem about the Department's role in arresting people, raising the concern about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents identifying themselves as law enforcement officers when they are in plain clothes and masked.
