58 Small Cap Stocks Hit 52-Week Highs On Wednesday

Strength in small caps is concentrated in specific industries, but the business stories behind the new highs vary widely.

Biotechnology leads the strength in small caps today, with 11 names on a list of 58 stocks hitting their 52-week highs. The largest company making a new high is Protagonist Therapeutics (PTGX), with a market value of about $9.9 billion and a 15.8% gain over the last month. While some runs are measured, others are not: Aehr Test Systems (AEHR) is up 79.5% over the last month alone. The central question is what kind of business performance is driving these prices.

Here are the small caps at their strongest price of the past year.

Is the underlying business earning its new high?

The list shows a sharp divergence in fundamentals, even among the largest names. Protagonist Therapeutics (PTGX) trades at 120.9 times trailing earnings, supported by revenue that grew 34.8% over the last twelve months and an operating margin of 20.7%. In contrast, Crinetics Pharmaceuticals (CRNX) saw its revenue grow 2928.4% over the same period, but its operating margin is -1302.5%. The market is rewarding top-line expansion in one case and profitable growth in another.

So how should a disciplined investor treat this list?

A 52-week-high list is a map of strength, and strong stocks often continue to perform. But a price is not a verdict on the business itself. The critical step is to look past the stock chart to the financial statements. A new high is an invitation to ask whether the company's revenue growth and margins justify the market's current valuation.

A new high tells you what the market already believes. The harder question is which of these runs management itself is underwriting. Our Guidance Momentum screen tracks exactly that: stocks where the company raised its own forward numbers.

New Highs Fade. Discipline Compounds

Some of the names on this list will keep setting highs for years, and some are at the top of their run right now. Sorting one from the other, name by name, every day, is the work most investors never keep up with.

That sorting is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does systematically: about 30 quality businesses screened for the fundamentals that sustain a run, held with rules instead of excitement. It has a track record of outpacing a benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. Use the high list for ideas; use the portfolio for the compounding.
