An op-ed by GVSU President Philomena V. Mantella, published in the December 15 issue of Crain's Detroit Business, asks state officials to address the chronic underfunding of Michigan's public universities.
Increased investment, Mantella writes, would help the state reverse population decline, strengthen the talent pipeline needed for Michigan to thrive and advance its "60 by 30" goal - ensuring that 60 percent of working-age adults hold a skill certificate or college degree by 2030.
Mantella also cites a report from the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics showing that 42 of Michigan's 50 "hottest jobs" require a bachelor's degree or higher.
