GAHANNA, Ohio - AEP Ohio is planning to upgrade the electric transmission grid in Franklin County, improving reliability and reducing the possibility of future outages for area customers.
The Beatty Road - Canal Street 138kV Transmission Line Rebuild Project involves rebuilding and rerouting sections of an existing 14-mile, 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission line between the Beatty Road Substation in Grove City and the Canal Street Substation near I-71 in downtown Columbus.
Replacing aging infrastructure from the 1960s will reduce the need for frequent, unplanned maintenance and help prevent future service interruptions.
Community members are invited to an open house to learn more about the benefits of the project and to share input on the potential routes for the sections of line that will be relocated. The public event takes place on Monday, March 30, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at The Grove Lodge, Scioto Grove Metro Park, 5172 Jackson Pike, Grove City. There will not be a formal presentation, so attendees can stop by at any time during the event to view maps, ask questions and share feedback.
Landowners and community members who can't attend may visit a virtual open house at AEPOhio.com/Beatty-Canal to get project details, view an interactive map and submit comments.
AEP Ohio is especially interested in input from landowners to help the company determine a final proposed power line route that minimizes impacts to the community and environment. Comments will be accepted through Friday, April 17.
A second open house will take place this summer before AEP Ohio files an application with the Ohio Power Siting Board. If approved, construction is expected to begin in spring 2027 and finish by fall 2028.
