For many veterans, the transition from military service to civilian life is about finding a new mission-one that offers independence, stability and a way to support the community. Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is proud to announce a new initiative that helps our local heroes do exactly that.
The College was recently awarded a $74,925 grant from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to expand its commercial driver's license (CDL) training program. Through the Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) grant, NICC will provide full tuition coverage for 15 qualified students over the next two years. This opportunity is specifically designed for veterans and their family members, ensuring that those who served-and those who supported them-have a clear path to a rewarding career.
A growing need for drivers
The demand for skilled drivers in our region is growing rapidly. According to Lightcast, a labor market analytics company, the need for CDL drivers in the NICC district is projected to grow by 12.8%, outpacing the national average by 4%. With 25% of the current workforce over the age of 55, the industry is facing a "retirement cliff," making this the perfect time for a new generation of drivers to take the wheel.
"Having a CDL license can be a very rewarding career," says Martin Hemann, NICC transportation program developer. "There are many opportunities for employment, whether it be for a local or regional carrier or a nationwide trucking company. You can earn a good living and it can give you a sense of independence and opportunities to see the country."
Commitment to our military families
NICC was recognized as a Silver-Level Military Friendly® School for the 2025-26 academic year and has held its Military Friendly School status for several years-a testament to our long-standing dedication to military-affiliated students. For Dawn Fleming, NICC assistant director of financial aid and veterans affairs coordinator, this grant is an extension of that core mission.
"We are deeply committed to supporting veterans by fostering an environment that encourages them to apply the skills developed during their military service while preparing for meaningful, sustainable employment," Fleming says. "That same commitment extends to their families. Many family members played a vital role in supporting their service members, and their success is just as meaningful. NICC is proud to support and encourage them in utilizing this pathway to become employment-ready and strengthen our community."
