A daylong workshop in Palmer will feature discussions and classes on how small-scale farming can strengthen Alaska's food system, providing Alaskans with the skills to start growing.
The Food Security through Agriculture workshop is from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, at the Alaska State Fairgrounds and Rebarchek Farm, 2075 Glenn Highway, Palmer. Jodie Anderson, director of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension, will lead the plenary session on food security efforts in Alaska.
The workshop is hosted by Alaska Farmland Trust, the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and Alaska Pacific University. Cooperative Extension will also have a table with publications available.
Check-in is at 9 a.m. at the Event Building on the Purple Trail at the north end of the fairgrounds. Hands-on and livestock presentations will be at the Rebarchek Farm at the south end of the fairgrounds. Directions will be available at check-in. Presentations are scheduled from 9:45 a.m.-2 p.m. They will cover seed starting, food preservation and canning, sourdough, access to land, meat rabbits, poultry, small business support, food as medicine and more.
Presentations are designed for adults; children are welcome but must remain with a supervising adult.
From 2-4 p.m., participants are invited to network and engage in table discussions, with refreshments and door prizes at the Event Building.
