BARRINGTON HILLS… State Representative Martin McLaughlin (R-Barrington Hills) is calling on communities, schools, and families across Illinois to start preparing now for America's upcoming 250th birthday in 2026.
"I still remember the excitement of our nation's Bicentennial in 1976," said Rep. McLaughlin. "As a kid, it felt like the entire country was celebrating together. It wasn't just history-it was pride, unity, and a powerful reminder of what it means to be an American. I even sported a red, white and blue plaid jacket that year looking like Herb Tarlek."
McLaughlin believes the Semiquincentennial-the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence-is a chance to reignite that same patriotic spirit.
"Our Founding Fathers were young, bold visionaries who risked everything to create a nation based on liberty and God-given rights," said McLaughlin. "As we look ahead to this historic milestone, we should be teaching our kids not just about the struggles, but about the courage and values that built this country."
Rep. McLaughlin is encouraging schools to incorporate more lessons on America's founding and hopes to see towns across Illinois decked out in red, white, and blue next summer.
"Whether it's fireworks, parades, or backyard BBQs - including red white and blue Bomb Pops - let's bring our communities together like we did in 1976," McLaughlin added. "The 250th is more than a date. It's a chance to come together, reflect on our history, and celebrate what unites us as Americans."
Rep. Martin McLaughlin serves the 52nd District, which includes portions of Cook, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties.
