SOUTHFIELD-Lawrence Technological University's College of Health Sciences announced the launch of its new online Doctor of Health Sciences program. The inaugural program will welcome its first students in January 2025.
The degree program is the first in Michigan. It is designed to empower and advance healthcare professionals in their career trajectories by providing them with foundational knowledge in policy, informatics, and high-level leadership abilities. As healthcare environments pivot to a more collaborative and interprofessional setting, the curriculum emphasizes developing knowledge and skills through interprofessional approaches.
This research-oriented doctorate program will closely follow LTU's 'Theory and Practice' motto by providing students with innovative academic programming with the latest advancements in technology. In contrast to other DHS programs that primarily focus on traditional health sciences, LTU's program offers a comprehensive perspective that prepares students for a broad range of leadership roles.
"At LTU's College of Health Sciences, every student engages in a curriculum that balances theoretical knowledge with practical application, equipping them with the skills and experiences essential for success in the rapidly evolving healthcare field. As an online program that emphasizes leadership, global health, and quality improvement, this program serves the needs of students and the workplace," Founding Dean Mary C. Schutten said.
The 54-credit hour, flexible program consists of 18 courses with modules lasting eight weeks, as well as a certificate component. The series of courses builds towards the completion of a Quality Improvement Project to develop research skills aimed at improving healthcare while also ensuring students develop critical thinking, decision-making, and project management skills.
The inaugural program's curriculum specializes in health system leadership, healthcare informatics, academic leadership, lifestyle management, and the humanities. The program aims to instill knowledge and assist students in becoming leaders who improve workplace and healthcare delivery to patients and clients, offer students the ability to personalize their education, and extend the college's impact on healthcare policy by producing graduates equipped to lead and innovate in a rapidly evolving field.
The online program is tailored to assist professionals of all levels in leading improvements in their organization, excelling in their given field, pursuing a new path in education, or expanding their applied research skills to improve the quality of healthcare.
