Fall access will continue as conditions allow through Oct. 15. The distance visitors can travel may change between Teklanika and Mountain Vista at mile 13 as snow, ice and other road conditions develop. Vehicle access may end earlier if conditions require the park to close the road at park headquarters at mile 3.4.
Weather and road conditions can change rapidly at this time of year, and sections of the road may open or close with little notice. Visitors should check current road and weather conditions before traveling and be prepared for changing conditions during their visit.
Visitors may encounter snow, ice and mud, particularly in shaded sections of the road. Motorists should drive cautiously and watch for wildlife, National Park Service employees and heavy equipment working along the road.
Fall campground operations are also changing. The final night for bus access to Sanctuary and Igloo campgrounds is Wednesday, Sept. 16. The final night at Teklanika Campground is Thursday, Sept. 17, and Savage River Campground closes Sunday, Sept. 20.
Beginning Monday, Sept. 21, the Bear Loop at Riley Creek Campground will be available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Water and trash services will not be available. Visitors must bring their own water and pack out all trash. At least five campsites will remain available throughout the winter.
