Since the last report, Taiwan has approved more genetically engineered (GE) products for import and use in food, feed, and processing. Taiwan has never allowed domestic production of GE crops or animals. In 2025, Taiwan imported nearly $1.5 billion of U.S. corn, soybeans, and cotton, about 35 percent of the $4.3 billion in total U.S. agricultural exports to the island. Authorities have not released a draft or policy on genome editing, even though the Executive Yuan raised the issue at its Food Safety Council in October 2025. The European Union's New Genomic Techniques regulation, which took effect in July 2026, has led to more discussion of genome editing in Taiwan.
