Stony Brook Surges into Top 200 in 2026 Global University Ranking

Stony Brook University has returned to the top 200 universities worldwide in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), reaching the milestone for the first time since 2014.

The University ranks No. 188 worldwide in the 2026 rankings, up 146 places from No. 334 in 2025. Among U.S. institutions, Stony Brook rose 24 places, from No. 83 to No. 59.

"This is truly a celebratory moment for our entire university community as we strive to take our exceptional university to new heights of excellence and impact," said Stony Brook University President Andrea Goldsmith. "Stony Brook's remarkable leap forward in the ARWU rankings reflects the bold ideas, brilliance, and groundbreaking work of our world-renowned faculty and students, including our recent Fields Medal honoree, John Pardon."

The ARWU, also known as the Shanghai Ranking, is one of the world's most widely recognized global university rankings. It evaluates universities primarily on measures of research strength and academic achievement. The criteria include faculty and alumni who have received Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, publications indexed in major citation databases and per capita academic performance.

Stony Brook made particularly strong gains this year in the ranking for faculty members who have won Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals, jumping from No. 154 to No. 38 worldwide, and the ranking for per capita academic performance, climbing from No. 597 to No. 407.

Stony Brook's improved showing in the awards category comes in the same year that John Pardon, a professor in the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics and Department of Mathematics, was named one of four recipients of the 2026 Fields Medal by the International Mathematical Union (IMU). ARWU's awards measure recognizes faculty who receive Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals while affiliated with an institution.

Stony Brook also improved in the measure of papers published in Nature and Science, moving from No. 228 to No. 197.

Goldsmith said the recognition also reflects Stony Brook's broader mission as a public research university and the momentum it hopes to build upon.

First published in 2003, the ARWU uses six indicators of academic and research performance to evaluate universities around the world. The methodology emphasizes research output, highly cited scholars and major international academic awards.
