Report: Cigarette smoking rate drops to record low 9.9%

The cigarette smoking rate among U.S. adults dropped to 9.9% in 2024, the lowest level ever recorded, according to a report by the New England Journal of Medicine. The report analyzed 2023-2024 National Health Interview Survey data and found that the use of other tobacco products, such as cigars and e-cigarettes, remained unchanged. The report found that 18.8% of adults, or 47.7 million, used at least one tobacco product.
