Madonna University Welcomes Dr. Christopher Dougherty as Eighth President

LIVONIA, MICH. - Madonna University celebrated the inauguration of Dr. Christopher Dougherty as its eighth president on Friday, October 11, 2024. The day-long event featured a Mass of thanksgiving, an installation ceremony, and various community gatherings.

Dr. Dougherty, who assumed office on July 1, 2023, brings over three decades of experience in higher education to his new role. He previously served at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia in various capacities, including as an associate professor for business and vice president for academic affairs.

The inauguration ceremony, held in Kresge Hall, included participation from university trustees, Felician Sisters, local officials, and members of the Madonna community. Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan of Livonia was among those who offered remarks.

In his inaugural address, President Dougherty emphasized the university's commitment to its Felician Heritage and Catholic identity. He highlighted plans to enhance community partnerships and expand academic offerings in technology, neurosciences, and health sciences.

"I am humbled and filled with joy to accept my role as the eighth President of Madonna University," President Dougherty stated. He connected his vision to the university's current mission theme: "The Lord has done great things for us, we are filled with joy!"

President Dougherty shared how his formative experiences were shaped by women religious, and just as the various orders of Sisters came from humble beginnings, so do each of us. "The respect for the dignity of each person embraces that we all, in our own way, come from humble beginnings. It also embraces the opportunity that we each have to grow from those humble beginnings to achieve success and sense of service that characterizes a Madonna graduate," he said.

The new president also shared positive enrollment trends, noting a 5% increase in full-time equivalent enrollment for Fall 2024, residence halls at capacity, and growth in transfer and graduate student populations.

The inauguration coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Felician Sisters in North America, underscoring the university's deep connections to its founding religious order.
