At Siena, we're proud to celebrate the resilience, courage, and achievements of our first-generation students-those who are the first in their families to attend college. These Saints are trailblazers, dreamers, and change-makers who inspire our community every day.
Being first-gen means more than earning a degree. It means opening doors for others, redefining what's possible, and building bridges where none existed before. Learn more about how Siena supports first-generation students here.
Every first-generation student's journey is unique, yet they all share a spirit of courage and hope. For Jeremiah Davis '24, that spirit began in The Bronx and led him to Siena, where he discovered a community that helped him thrive. Here's his story:
Growing up on Gun Hill Road in The Bronx, I learned early on what it meant to make the most of what you have. On hot summer days, we turned fire pumps into sprinklers and used the fire escape drop ladder as a basketball hoop. Raised by a single mom, my brother and I learned the value of hard work, integrity, and community. Those lessons became the foundation for my journey as a first-generation college student at Siena University.
Coming from a community where few pursued higher education, I did not know what to expect. Everything-from FAFSA and class registration to office hours-was new. At times I felt guilty for being in college, knowing many from my block never had the chance. Other times I questioned whether I belonged. Imposter syndrome was real, but my determination to make my family proud was stronger.
The HEOP program became my foundation. My advisor, Cynda Brousseau, encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and get involved. Through internships, clubs, and peer mentorship, I started to see all that Siena had to offer. More than anything, it was the people who made the difference. Students smiled, held doors, and asked how my day was going. It was a culture shock, but in the best way.
Through my journey, I learned that being first-gen is not a weakness. It is a badge of honor. It means figuring things out on your own, working hard, and paving the way for those who will follow. To every first-gen student out there: You belong. You are not alone. Embrace the journey, because you are not just earning a degree-you are changing your story and inspiring others to do the same.
