Macomb Community Action to host 36th annual Walk for Warmth

Registration is now open for the 36th annual Macomb Community Action Walk for Warmth. The walk is scheduled for Saturday, February 28 in downtown Mount Clemens starting at the Macomb County Administration Building located at 1 South Main St. On-site registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the walk beginning at 10 a.m. Walkers will be able to choose either a 1.5-mile or 3-mile route through beautiful downtown Mount Clemens. All funds raised through the event will be used to assist low-income individuals with heat-related emergencies, like paying a utility bill or repairing/replacing a broken furnace.

"This event reflects the strength and character of our community," said Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel. "For 36 years, Macomb County residents have come together with compassion and a commitment to help neighbors in need remain safe and warm through Michigan's harsh winters. I encourage everyone to take part this year and help carry on this proud tradition of generosity and support."

Since it began, Walk for Warmth has raised over $800,000 to help ensure that local families can stay warm in their homes throughout the winter.

"Walk for Warmth has a long history of providing support for our neighbors in need during the winter months, and this year will be no different." said Andrew Cox, director/health officer of Macomb County Health and Community Services. "It's a fun, healthy way to support Macomb County residents who can really use the help."

"Each year, Macomb County residents, community partners and our sponsors come together to build upon this outstanding legacy and demonstrate that Macomb County is a community of caring," said Edward Scott, director of Macomb Community Action. "We're excited to host this year's event in downtown Mount Clemens. Join us and participate in this fun, community-focused event."

The following instances illustrate the dramatic impact of community support for Walk for Warmth in Macomb County.

  • Walk for Warmth funds helped a disabled single mother, living on limited Social Security income, restore her gas service just in time for winter. She and her daughter now have heat and safety during the freezing months - a vital lifeline when they needed it most.
  • A local schoolteacher, unable to make ends meet, was at risk of losing gas service. Walk for Warmth stepped in to prevent the shutoff and help him catch up, ensuring his home stayed warm while he continued supporting his students.
  • When the furnace of a family with a limited fixed income from Social Security started to malfunction, MCA was able to use Walk for Warmth funds to correct the problem with the furnace and ensure the family had a safe, functional furnace.

This year's Walk for Warmth event is sponsored by Consumers Energy, Genisys Credit Union, OneMacomb and Nickel & Saph Insurance.
