Charles Kelley Reflects On His Sobriety Journey With Before-And-After Photos

Charles Kelley reflected on his sobriety journey.

The Lady A star, 44, posted two photos on Instagram on Monday (August 31). One photo shows Kelley with his wife, Cassie Kelley, and the other is a throwback photo that was taken before he decided to pursue sobriety. Kelley wrote in his caption: "My best filter is just…not drinking. Swipe to see my before my wife asked me if I ever look at a photo of myself before I was sober and think 'who is that guy?' This is the one

"I could go on about the many blessings that have come from putting it down way more than looking healthier, but it's a nice reminder of a place I don't wanna go back to," he said.

Kelley began his sobriety journey in 2022. Lady A shared a statement in August of that year to announce they would postpone their tour to support Kelley. The trio - which also includes Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood - said at the time, "we're proud to say that Charles has embarked on a journey to sobriety. So, right now in order to be the healthiest, strongest and most creative band we can be, Lady A will take the time with the support of our families and team of professionals to walk through this together."

Kelley later opened up about his journey. Days after Lady A's announcement, the singer-songwriter expressed his gratitude for everyone's support. He said "2022 was a big year of change," and in June 2023, the artist and father of two officially marked one year of sobriety. Kelley later said on TODAY, "I'm finding so much more purpose. …I'm loving this new lease on life."

"I'm really proud of him," Cassie said during a CBS Mornings interview in May 2023. "It's not easy to walk through. And it's not easy to, you know, stay connected and to just put your head down and do the work because it is a lot of work. And, you know, because he keeps showing up every day, I get to keep showing up every day, and our family gets to be intact so I'm really, really proud of him."
