Thursday strike is averted

Registered nurses at AHMC Seton Medical Center in Daly City, Calif., have called off their one-day strike scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 19. Nurses represented by California Nurses Association/National Nurses Untied (CNA/NNU) have reached a tentative agreement with AHMC on a new union contract that addresses the issues they were set to strike over, namely, safe staffing and nurse recruitment and retention.

Nurses were preparing to strike for safe staffing measures because they know safe staffing is an essential part of safe patient care. Nurses stayed at the table with AHMC management to reach a deal on their new contract, averting the planned strike.

"The nurses made it clear what needs to be done in order for us to provide optimal care for our patients and our community," said Michelle Kubota, a registered nurse at Seton. "We are encouraged that our solidarity resulted in a tentative agreement. We will now put this tentative agreement to a vote."

Nurses at the hospital will soon vote on ratifying the new bargaining agreement. Nurses had given hospital management 10-days notice for their work stoppage in order to ensure safe patient care.

Seton nurses have been in negotiations for a new contract since January 2025.

California Nurses Association represents 300 nurses at Seton Medical Center.

California Nurses Association/National Nurses United is the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the nation with 100,000 members in more than 200 facilities throughout California and nearly 225,000 RNs nationwide.
