Wilkes-Barre doctor receives family medicine teaching award

SCRANTON, Pa. -
Geisinger physician, educator and mentor Bu Jung Kim, MD, was recently awarded the Woloski Family Medicine Chair Award for teaching excellence.

The award recognizes a family medicine doctor and college faculty member who inspires Geisinger learners to excel at providing primary care, a Geisinger priority.

Jason R. Woloski, MD, chair of the academic Family Medicine Department at Geisinger College of Health Sciences, said Kim was chosen for his dedication to inspiring the next generation of outstanding family doctors.

"Dr. Kim not only welcomes and mentors learners at all stages, but actively contributes to meaningful research, while continuing to play a vital role in building and strengthening our growing academic department," said Woloski.

Dr. Kim is a regular preceptor at the Kistler Family Medicine Residency, teaches medical students in the classroom at Geisinger School of Medicine and guides several medical student research projects. He also welcomes medical students to his Geisinger Mt. Pocono clinic.

"Geisinger places great emphasis on the power of family medicine to keep our communities healthy," Woloski said. "That's why our department makes sure we recognize excellent faculty."

Kim agreed that family medicine, and doctors who build relationships with patients, are at the heart of good health.

"One of the most humbling aspects of teaching is when students share that they see me as a role model," he said. "I want students to know that the doctor-patient relationship in family medicine is not just a powerful personal relationship - it's where we can solve many of the problems of modern medicine."
