Boise State Theatre Arts students team up with award-winning playwright

The Boise State Theatre Arts Program will team up with the Sun Valley Playwright's Residency and Boise Contemporary Theater to stage free readings of work by the Resident Playwright for 2026-2027, Talene Monahon. Selected by the Sun Valley Playwright's Residency (SVPR), the Resident Playwright spends the year developing a new play in Idaho and offering community events. This year's Resident Playwright, Talene Monahon, authored the play Meet the Cartozians, a 2026 Pulitzer Prize Finalist for Drama and winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play.

Working closely with Monahon and director Jessica Ires Morris, Boise State theatre arts students will stage free readings of Monahon's play, The Good John Proctor, in Ketchum and in Boise this October. Selected as one of The New Yorker's "Top 10 Best Plays of 2023," The Good John Proctor "takes inspiration from Arthur Miller's The Crucible and brings Monahon's distinctive combination of historical reimagining, dark humor, and theatrical invention to one of the most famous stories in the American dramatic canon," according to the SVPR Press Release.

Now in its third year, the partnership between Boise State's Department of Theatre, Film and Creative Writing, SVPR and the Boise Contemporary Theater provides an invaluable opportunity for students. Collaborating with accomplished playwrights and outside directors allows students to gain professional experience, feedback and insight from working artists, all while strengthening the connections between local artistic organizations.

Sun Valley Playwright's Residency, in collaboration with Boise State University's Department of Theatre, Film, and Creative Writing and Boise Contemporary Theater, presents free readings of Talene Monahon's The Good John Proctor in Ketchum and Boise. Directed by Jessica Ires Morris, the readings will feature Theatre Arts majors from Boise State University. The Ketchum readings on Saturday, October 17, will be followed by light refreshments and brief conversations with Monahon moderated by SVPR Advisory Board Member and former Co-Artistic Director of Company of Fools Denise Simone. The Boise program on Sunday, October 18, will begin with a 4 PM Q&A with Monahon, followed by the reading.
