API Releases New Standard to Strengthen Frac Iron Safety

WASHINGTON, January 20, 2026 - The American Petroleum institute (API) today announced the publication of API Standard 16FI (API Std 16FI), Frac Iron Guidelines and Requirements. This first edition standard establishes safety guidelines for temporary high-pressure equipment (also known as frac iron) used during hydraulic fracturing operations at oil and gas well sites.

During hydraulic fracturing operations, well stimulation activities enhance a well's ability to produce oil and gas. Frac iron is used during these activities to move stimulation fluids (water, sand, and chemicals) from pumps to the wellhead. Comprised of piping, hoses, connections, manifolds, and pressure-relief devices, the equipment supports critical procedures, such as plug-and-perf and ball-drop operations. Because frac iron operates under extreme pressures, protecting workers while supporting environmental safety are critical priorities.

API Std 16FI was developed to address these priorities by providing clear guidance for the design, manufacturing, and use of frac iron equipment, supporting safer working conditions and heightened operational integrity at well sites.

"Establishing consistent expectations for frac iron equipment is an important step toward enhancing safety across hydraulic fracturing operations," API Senior Vice President of Global Industry Services Anchal Liddar said. "API Std 16FI reinforces API's commitment to developing standards that support rigorous performance criteria for equipment and safer operational practices."

By establishing consistent expectations for frac iron equipment used during hydraulic fracturing operations, API 16FI strengthens safety performance at well sites, underscoring API's commitment to protecting workers and supporting responsible energy development.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) represents all segments of America's oil and natural gas industry, supporting nearly 11 million U.S. jobs. With approximately 600 members, API companies produce, process, and distribute the majority of the nation's energy. Founded in 1919, API has developed over 800 standards to enhance operational and environmental safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
