NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (January 12, 2025) - Five officers of the New Brunswick Police Department were promoted during a ceremony held at City Hall on Thursday, Jan. 9. Mayor Jim Cahill and Chief Vincent Sabo presided over the event.
"Today, we celebrate the promotions of five exceptional officers who have demonstrated leadership, knowledge, and unwavering commitment throughout their careers. These promotions represent more than just new titles; they are symbols of trust, responsibility, and the ability to lead with integrity," Mayor Cahill said.
"As these officers step into their new roles, I have every confidence that they will continue to uphold the highest standards of excellence, leading their fellow officers with integrity, courage, and compassion. Their promotions are a testament to their hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment to serving our community," he said.
Three of the officers were promoted to Lieutenant and two to Sergeant. The promotions include:
- Dorian Minond, promoted to Lieutenant, joined the department in 2014, serving in both the Patrol Division and the Downtown/Community Policing Unit. In 2020, he was promoted to Sergeant, taking on key roles as the department's Records Unit Supervisor, Accreditation Manager, and OEM Deputy Coordinator. Lt. Dorian holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Rutgers University. In 2023, he earned his Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University.
- John "Gary" Yurkovic Jr., promoted to Lieutenant, joined the department in 2003, beginning his career in the Patrol Division. In 2010, he became a Detective in the Anti-Crime Unit, and in 2017, he was promoted to Sergeant, serving as a squad supervisor in the Patrol Division. He has been recognized for his service on multiple occasions, receiving the 200 Club Valor Award three times, as well as the NBPD Combat Cross, the Trooper William Carroll Heroism Award, and the NAPO Top Cop Award. Lt. Yurkovic comes from a proud family tradition in law enforcement. His father, Capt. John "Gary" Yurkovic Sr., retired from the NBPD in 2006, and his brother, Michael Yurkovic, is a police Captain.
- Nicholas DeFalco, promoted to Lieutenant, joined the department in 2011 after serving four years with the Franklin Township Police Department. His career has included assignments in the Patrol Division, Street Crimes Unit, Downtown Patrol, and as a Field Training Officer for new recruits. In 2020, he was promoted to Sergeant and currently serves in the department's Internal Affairs Unit. Lt. DeFalco holds a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Montclair State University and a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Columbia Southern University.
- Robert Triebsch, promoted to Sergeant, joined the department in 2014 and has served in the Patrol Division while training new recruits as a certified Field Training Officer. A graduate of Rutgers University, Sgt. Triebsch holds a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology.
- Stewart Way, promoted to Sergeant, joined the department in 2015 and has served in the Patrol Division. He is a certified Drug Recognition Expert, a member of the Middlesex County Rapid Deployment Response Team, and a Police Bicycle Patrol Instructor. Sgt. Way is a graduate of Rutgers University with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice.
