Iowa Supreme Court Schedules Special Evening Session in Des Moines

The Iowa Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case Richmond v. Jefferson County Attorney during a special evening session in Des Moines, Wednesday, February 11, at 7:00 p.m., in the Supreme Court Courtroom on the fourth floor of the Judicial Branch Building, 1111 East Court Avenue.

The evening session is open to the public and provides an opportunity for residents, who may not be able to attend the court's regular morning and afternoon sessions, to watch the court conduct oral arguments in person. The Polk County Bar Association will sponsor a public reception with the supreme court justices in the Judicial Branch Building second-floor Light Court following the oral arguments.

Summary of the case, Richmond v. Jefferson County Attorney, case number 25-0366 from Jefferson County District Court

The Jefferson County Attorney placed Sheriff Bart Richmond on a Brady-Giglio list, which identifies law enforcement officers whose actions may raise questions about their honesty, pursuant to Iowa Code section 80F.1(1)(a). The sheriff asked the district court to review this decision, and the court ordered his name removed. The county attorney appealed, arguing that prosecutors must share information that could affect a witness's credibility and that the current law giving courts authority to remove names from the list, a 2024 statutory amendment, may violate constitutional principles.

Attorneys' briefs for the case are posted on the Iowa Judicial Branch website.

Proceedings will be streamed live on the Iowa Judicial Branch YouTube channel.
