On March 9, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) announced the kick-off of the public planning process for The 14th Street Plan: Keeping People Moving and Business Booming plan. The scope of the project that is expected to deliver a "once-in-a-generation upgrade" will stretch the entire length of the 14th Street corridor and neighboring streets according to the press release by NYC DOT and will "focus on transformational public space and safety upgrades for pedestrians, bus riders, cyclists and more. Since the busway was installed in late 2019, bus speeds increased by as much as 24 percent and ridership grew as much as 30 percent." Last July, it was reported by the New York City Economic Development Corp. (NYCEDC) that the 24-month, $3 million study being undertaken by NYC DOT, in close collaboration with NYCEDC and the BIDs, will "evaluate transformational upgrades to pedestrian and transit rider experience" along the corridor as well as modernizing anchor public spaces like Union Square Park to further build upon the success of the 14th Street busway. According to information provided in July, funding for the study includes a $2 million commitment from the city - $1.5 million in the city's Fiscal Year (FY) 26 Adopted Budget and $500,000 from the NYCEDC, with the remaining $1 million from local Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), of which $750,000 is being contributed by Union Square Partnership and $250,000 from the Meatpacking District. The first public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Pratt Institute, 144 West 14th Street, 2nd Floor.
