New Permanent Representative of Brazil Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Ricardo de Souza Monteiro, the new Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. de Souza Monteiro had been serving as Chief of Staff to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, since 2023. He served as Director of the Department of Economic, Financial and Services Policy, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil from 2022 to 2023; Minister-Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Brazil to the United Nations in New York from 2017 to 2022; and Counsellor and subsequently Minister-Counsellor at the Embassy of Brazil in Washington, D.C. from 2011 to 2017.

Mr. de Souza Monteiro joined the Brazilian diplomatic service in 1994 and held multiple positions earlier in his career within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, including as Head of the Agriculture and Commodities Division (2009-2011); Assistant in the Trade Policy Division (1998-2000); and Assistant in the Finance and Development Policy Division (1996-1998). His overseas assignments include service at the Embassies of Brazil in London, Buenos Aires and Beijing.

Mr. de Souza Monteiro was born in Rio de Janeiro on 7 July 1964. He holds a master's degree in business administration from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, and a bachelor's degree in economics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
