UPDATE: Chicago Avenue over Kennedy bridge repairs

7/22/2026 UPDATE: The project has been rescheduled to begin, weather permitting, the week of Aug. 17.

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that repairs to the bridge carrying Chicago Avenue over the Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90/94), in Chicago, will begin, weather permitting, Monday, July 27.

To complete the work, Chicago Avenue will be reduced from two lanes to one in both directions with various lane shifts approaching the bridge. The public also can expect occasional overnight lane closures on the Kennedy at Chicago Avenue. ​

The $1.4 million project, which consists of repairing the bridge deck, approaches and substructure, replacing expansion joints and installing a new deck overlay, is anticipated to be completed in November.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
