George Washington Memorial Parkway Clears Way for Rehabilitation at Clara Barton National Historic Site

Finding confirms work will protect historic buildings and improve safety and access

GLEN ECHO, Md. - The National Park Service has signed a finding of no significant impact for a rehabilitation project at Clara Barton National Historic Site, determining that the planned improvements will not cause significant harm to the environment.

NPS prepared an environmental assessment to evaluate options for improving the former home of Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. The assessment focused on safety upgrades, improved accessibility and updates to aging building and environmental systems.

The planned improvements will protect historic structures, support park staff and create a safer, more welcoming experience for visitors. NPS will complete the work to meet current health and safety standards while preserving the historic character of Clara Barton's home.

NPS appreciates everyone who participated in the public review process. Public input helps NPS care for places like Clara Barton's home so future generations can learn from her life of service, compassion and leadership.
