Major Traffic Shift Upcoming:
I-20 Westbound Connecting Lane and New I-285 Southbound Ramp
Map of the new I-20 WB connecting lane to I-285 northbound and southbound.

The new I-20 westbound connecting lane and flyover ramp to I-285 southbound is expected to open in Q2 2026, a major milestone for the I-285/I-20 East Interchange Project.

Looking ahead to this change, what are the key things motorists need to know?

  • Motorists should be prepared to transition from I-20 WB to access I-285 (NB and SB) approximately 2 miles before the interchange, and 0.5 miles before the Wesley Chapel Road exit ramp.

  • The new westbound connecting lane separates entering and exiting traffic from the general purpose through lanes.

  • The connecting lanes will provide access to the Wesley Chapel Interchange as well as I-285 northbound and southbound.

  • Motorists traveling northbound will exit via the left lane, and southbound, via the right lane.

  • Motorists continuing to I-285 southbound will travel on the new flyover ramp over the interchange before merging onto I-285 southbound.

Stay tuned to Georgia DOT's social media channels for additional updates about the final opening date and additional opportunities to see what traveling through the interchange will look like!

Construction Improvement Update:
I-285 Northbound over Snapfinger Road
A smaller, but still impactful improvement is happening on I-285 northbound over Snapfinger Road. The I-285 northbound mainline bridge is being widened to accommodate the ramp from I-20 and additional capacity approaching the Glenwood Road exit. Motorists can expect this widened bridge to be opened to traffic in Q3 of this year.
