Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak (R-ND) voted in favor of three bills to protect American students from the influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The bills prohibit U.S. public elementary and secondary schools from taking money from the CCP or entering contracts with entities tied to foreign governments, while strengthening parental oversight over foreign involvement in their local schools.
"America's schools should be focused on educating our kids, not advancing the interests of foreign governments who do not share our values," Fedorchak said. "The CCP will stop at nothing to influence our children, and these bills help shut the door on their attempts to gain a foothold in our classrooms."
H.R. 1005, the Combatting the Lies of Authoritarians in School Systems Act, prohibits public K-12 schools from accepting funds or entering contracts with the Chinese government, the CCP, or any individual or entity acting on their behalf as a condition of receiving federal education funds. It also requires schools to disclose any funding from or contracts with a foreign source to the Department of Education.
H.R. 1069, the PROTECT Our Kids Act, prevents federal education funding from going to any elementary or secondary school that directly or indirectly receives support from the Chinese government, including those that continue to host a Confucius Classroom. Confucius Classrooms are Chinese language and learning centers in elementary and secondary schools which are funded or otherwise supported by the Chinese government.
H.R. 1049, the Transparency in Reporting of Adversarial Contributions to Education Act, requires local educational agencies to inform parents of their right to request information about foreign funding or influence as a condition of receiving federal education funds.
