WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, released the following statement after Republicans forced a vote today on a partisan funding bill that pushes America closer to a government shutdown and fails to address the health care and inflation crisis they have created.
Heinrich and his Democratic colleagues have made clear that they are eager to vote for a budget that fixes the harm Trump and Republicans have caused to the American people and their pocketbooks.
Republicans have full control of the House, Senate, and the White House.
"Donald Trump has been president for 9 months now and he has only made our country worse off.
"When Republicans passed their Big, Bad Bill, they took money away from working families to give tax cuts to billionaires. Now, health care premiums are going up, utility bills are skyrocketing, and groceries are becoming even less affordable. They own all of this.
"The American people deserve a government funding bill that protects their health care from unsustainable price hikes, lowers costs, and ensures that this Administration follows the rule of law. But Trump and Republicans are refusing to negotiate a bipartisan government funding bill that does this - recklessly pushing us closer to a government shutdown that will have devastating consequences for working families.
"Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House. If the government shuts down, it won't be because of Democrats - it'll be because Republicans walked away from their jobs and the American people."
