JUNO BEACH, Fla . - Florida Power & Light Company has activated its cold-weather preparedness plan as Florida braces for the coldest temperatures it's seen in more than a decade. In addition to extreme cold, high winds are also forecast. FPL is preparing its systems, crews and equipment and is ready to reliably serve customers' increased electricity needs across the state.
A word from Armando Pimentel, FPL CEO:"Our teams prepare for this year-round. We will continue to operate all available power plants up to maximum output and put crews and materials where they're needed most. If conditions warrant, we will use our voluntary energy management tools during peak demand hours. We are finalizing the necessary preparations, and we hope our customers have taken the proper precautions for this unusually cold weather too."
What FPL is doing now
Coordinating closely with other utilities, state officials, and the Florida Reliability Coordinating Council (FRCC), which has announced a Generating Capacity Advisory due to high electric load forecasts resulting from low temperatures and potential low operating margins.
Running all available power plants up to maximum output to meet higher demand
Pre-positioning crews, equipment and materials in areas expected to see the coldest temperatures
Increasing lineworker and vegetation staffing to respond quickly to any localized outages
Preparing voluntary load control programs for potential use during peak cold-weather hours
Monitoring the grid 24/7 to stay ahead of changing conditions
Why localized outages may still occur
Heating systems use two to three times more electricity than air conditioning. Even though FPL has sufficient power to serve customers, the increased electricity use can overload neighborhood equipment-similar to a breaker tripping at home. These outages tend to be localized, and lineworkers are pre-positioned to respond quickly as conditions allow.
What customers can do
For customers concerned about the impact severe cold weather may have on their electricity bills, here are some ways to remain comfortable and save energy:
Set the thermostat to a comfortable temperature for the family. Every degree below 68 helps saveup to 5% on your heating costs.
Avoid increasing the thermostat setting more than two degrees at a time to prevent expensive auxiliary heating.
Use electric blankets and space heaters to keep warm in small areas.
Safety reminders
Never use stoves or ovens to heat a home.
Use caution while driving. Whenapproaching an intersection with a traffic signal that's not working, Florida law requires it to be treated as a four-way stop.
If planning to use a space heater, follow the manufacturer's instructions and keep children and pets at least three feet away. Always turn off and unplug space heaters when leaving a room for an extended period of time.
