April is dedicated to Severe Weather Safety, a timely reminder as spring storms begin to peak across Illinois. Severe weather can develop quickly, bringing thunderstorms, damaging winds, hail, and even tornadoes. Taking steps now to strengthen your preparedness keeps you - and the entire Redbird community - safe and informed throughout the season.
Here are key preparedness actions for April:
-
Know how to identify severe weather risks. Review the difference between watches and warnings, and make sure you understand the alerts issued by the National Weather Service. Watches mean conditions are favorable; warnings mean immediate action is needed.
-
Keep weather alerts activated and updated. Turn on Wireless Emergency Alerts, sign up for ISU Emergency Alerts (students are automatically enrolled), download the Safe Redbirds app, and keep multiple ways to receive weather updates, such as NOAA weather radios and local notification systems.
-
Review your shelter locations. Identify the safest place to go during tornado warnings or high-wind events. In most buildings, this means an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows. At home, on campus, or at work, make sure all members of your household or office know where to go.
-
Refresh your emergency kit for severe storms. Include flashlights, extra batteries, first-aid supplies, a portable charger, sturdy shoes, and copies of important documents stored in waterproof containers. Make sure your kit remains accessible, even during a power outage.
-
Practice your severe weather plan. Conduct a quick drill with your household or office. Review where to shelter, how to communicate if separated, and what steps to take when a warning is issued. Familiarity helps reduce confusion and speeds up response during real emergencies.
Preparing ahead of time helps reduce risk, increases confidence, and ensures our Redbird community is resilient in the face of unpredictable spring storms.
