The University of New Mexico is currently reviewing a number of policies, including those related to nondiscrimination and Title IX, for compliance with certain federal executive orders and legal determinations.
The proposed changes to policies related to Title IX and nondiscrimination, posted for abbreviated public comment per UAP 1100 through April 4, aim to navigate the evolving higher education landscape while upholding the university's core values. As revised, these policies will continue to ensure that employment practices - including opportunities, hiring, promotion, retention, and pay - are equitable, fair, and non-discriminatory in accordance with applicable law.
The public comment period is designed to gather community input, which will be reviewed to inform further revisions to the policy language.
As a public university, UNM relies on federal and state funding and must ensure its policies align with relevant laws and directives.
The university administration has stated that it "will only respond to specific and actionable federal requirements or actions" and has posted relevant information, including policies that will be under review, to its Updates and Provisional Guidance related to 2025 Federal Executive Actions. The recommendations to modify these policies are based on thorough assessments of new requirements, incorporating legal analysis and guidance from industry experts. While legal challenges are ongoing and fluid, the University must comply with existing legal requirements. If a final court decision determines a change of course becomes necessary or appropriate, the University will make the necessary changes.
After the period of public comment, revisions to the proposed policies may be made. Final drafts are then circulated to key administrators and approved by the UNM President.
