MPD seeking to learn lessons from ALCS shooting response

MADISON, Wis. - The Madison Police Department has requested a formal review of its response to the deadly shooting at Abundant Life Christian School.

The request comes with the utmost respect for the victims, survivors, their families and all students and staff at ALCS.

On Dec. 16, 2024, a student shot and killed a teacher and classmate and injured six others. Dozens of first responders from across southern Wisconsin responded to the scene. The after-action review will provide an unbiased evaluation into this response and focus on the coordination between responding agencies.

"This review is not about blame - it's about learning and improving. It's about using our experience to help other cities best respond to tragic incidents," said Madison Police Chief John Patterson.

The Madison Police Department has partnered with the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services and the National Policing Institute to conduct the review. It will focus on what worked well, what challenges were encountered and how the Madison Police Department and other public safety groups can better prepare for future critical incidents.

"Our community is still healing from this tragedy. We will never fully understand why this had to happen. But we can honor those affected through meaningful action," said Chief Patterson.

A Critical Response Team is examining all relevant information connected to this incident, such as 911 call logs, police video, department policies, incident reports and media coverage. The team has already completed several focus groups with public safety professionals. It will return to Madison in February to conduct more.

Members of the ALCS community, Madison residents and other government and support agencies directly involved may participate in these groups. The conversations will be approached with sensitivity, privacy and compassion. If you have questions or would like to participate, please contact Samantha Rhinerson with the National Policing Institute at [email protected].

Participation is voluntary and confidential. Those wishing to share their experience can attend a focus group or arrange a one-on-one meeting.

The Madison Police Department recognizes transparency and accountability are vital to maintaining public trust, especially in moments of deep community pain.
