Dear Neighbor,

Spring is in the air and construction on the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project, located in Cobb and Fulton counties, is right around the corner. You may notice increased activity along the project corridor as crews survey, perform geological testing, coordinate utilities, clear trees, and grade access points to the worksite.

Once final design is complete, construction will begin in summer 2025. Please note the project schedule is subject to change.
The project is reconstructing and widening several interstate, system-to-system ramps at the I-285/I-20 West Interchange and adding a combination of collector-distributor (CD) lanes or connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange.
Key elements of the project include:
  • Relocating all left-hand exits and entrances to the right side of the roadway
  • Upgrading and/or replacement of existing bridges and ramps
  • Constructing a connecting lane, also known as a CD lane system, on I-20 westbound from the interchange to Fulton Industrial Boulevard
  • Constructing lanes and providing improvements along I-20 from Factory Shoals Road (east of Thornton Road) to Hamilton E. Holmes Drive
  • Modifying and/or replacing several bridges along I-20, including the bridges over CSX Railroad, Chattahoochee River, and Fulton Industrial Boulevard
  • Adding lanes and improvements along I-285 from D.L. Hollowell Parkway to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive
  • Reconstructing and/or adding sound barriers throughout the project

The project's design concept was recently updated to include:
  • Relocation of the planned, braided ramp from I-20 westbound to Fulton Industrial Boulevard to an at-grade ramp
  • Consolidated exit ramps from I-20 eastbound to I-285 northbound/southbound
  • Replacement of bridges carrying I-20 eastbound/westbound over I-285 northbound/southbound
  • Relocation of I-20 centerline back to its existing location
  • A more compact interchange, horizontally and vertically

The updated design concept provides the following additional benefits compared to the previous concept:
  • Reduction of delays in the project corridor by an estimated 20%
  • Increase of average vehicle speed through the interchange by approximately 10%
  • Smoother merging and diverging utilizing longer auxiliary lanes and connecting lanes
  • Reduction of impacts to environmentally sensitive areas
  • Noise impacts to surrounding properties will be lessened
  • Accelerated completion of meaningful improvements within the project corridor
