CHICAGO - Students and staff at Charles W. Earle STEM Elementary organized a surprise rally to honor their beloved principal Wednesday morning on the heels of a prestigious statewide award. The Illinois Principals Association (IPA) recently named Earle Principal Regina Latimer-Lake the 2026 Elementary School Principal of the Year. Principal Latimer-Lake was chosen from a competitive pool of 21 regional winners who enhance student learning, foster positive school climates, and make significant impacts on their communities. The Earle school community helped present her with the award, sharing heartfelt wishes and celebrating her statewide victory.
"We are all so excited that Principal Latimer-Lake has been recognized. However, I am not surprised. " said Dr. Macquline King, Interim CEO/Superintendent of Chicago Public Schools. "I've had the pleasure of witnessing her growth from a good leader to an excellent one. Her passion and dedication to the Earle school community have finally garnered the recognition she deserves."
Principal Latimer-Lake brings more than 20 years of experience serving Chicago Public Schools (CPS), beginning her career as a teacher and now leading Earle STEM Elementary. A proud mother of two and a product of CPS herself, she is committed to supporting Black and Brown students and families within the Englewood community.
Holding a Bachelor of Science in elementary education, a Master's in reading specialist, a Master's in curriculum instruction, and a Master's in urban school leadership, Principal Latimer-Lake plans to pursue a Doctoral Degree in literacy. Under her leadership, Earle STEM has prioritized the development of strong critical thinking skills, creativity, and collaboration among students, preparing them for success in high school, college, and beyond. The school has achieved significant milestones, including a 100-student enrollment increase, designation from WHO as a STEM Demonstration Site, and a commendable rating from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). Principal Latimer-Lake has also improved student attendance by more than 10 percentage points, reduced disciplinary incidents, and raised teacher retention to an impressive 95 percent.
"None of this would have been possible without the incredible team here at Earle STEM. Everyone, from the custodial staff to the teachers, coaches, Englewood Community Advisory Council, and the amazing community, works so hard for our students, " said Principal Latimer-Lake. "Together, we have demonstrated that we can achieve anything. I am also grateful to the many leaders who came before me and provided guidance, teaching me the importance of showing up. None of this would have been possible without their support."
Principal Latimer-Lake is set to be recognized at the IPA's Education Leaders Annual Conference in October 2026.
