Full closure of Illinois 157 and Illinois 162 intersection begins Feb. 26

GLEN CARBON - The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced a full closure of the intersection of Illinois 157 and Illinois 162 in Madison County starting, weather permitting, at 7 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26.

During the closure, traffic will not be permitted on Illinois 157 and Illinois 162 at the intersection. Both eastbound and westbound Illinois 162 will be closed, and neither will have access to Illinois 157.

A signed detour will be in place as follows:

  • Northbound Illinois 157: Interstate 55/70 westbound to I-255 northbound to I-270 eastbound to Illinois 157.
  • Southbound Illinois 157: I-270 westbound to I-255 southbound to I-55/70 eastbound to Illinois 157.
  • Westbound Illinois 162: Illinois 159 northbound to I-270 westbound to I-255 southbound to Illinois 162.
  • Eastbound Illinois 162: I-255 northbound to I-270 eastbound to Illinois 159 southbound to Illinois 162.

The closure is necessary to allow crews to construct a new bridge and intersection. The $17.6 million project is expected to be completed by Oct. 31.

Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes during this closure. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, be alert for changing conditions, obey all construction signage and refrain from using mobile devices while approaching and traveling through the work zone.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
