Two decades after their sudden disbandment, a washed-up trio gets one more shot at the spotlight. Will they be able to get over twenty years of bad blood and bad decisions to make it back on stage? Wild Sing , the comedy film starring Gang Dong-won, comes to Netflix on July 31.
The film follows Triangle, a three-member co-ed dance group that ruled the charts in the early 2000s before an overnight scandal ended their joyride. Twenty years later, an offer to reunite and perform on stage pulls leader Hyun-woo (Gang Dong-won) out of survival-broadcaster obscurity and back in search of the bandmates he lost along the way: rapper Sang-gu (Um Tae-goo), buried in debt from a failed solo attempt, and center Do-mi (Park Ji-hyun), who opted for life as the daughter-in-law of a chaebol family - one of Korea's family-run business dynasties.
Wild Sing drew strong anticipation in Korea as the latest film from Gang Dong-won ( Uprising ), one of the country's most recognizable leading men, alongside Um Tae-goo ( Night in Paradise ), Park Ji-hyun ( You and Everything Else ) and Oh Jung-se ( It's Okay to Not Be Okay ), who plays Triangle's old rival, "Ballad Prince" Choi Seong-gon.
Behind the nostalgia is real K-pop pedigree. Triangle's fictional discography was shaped by JYP Entertainment collaborators Shim Eun-ji (TWICE, SHINee, IU, ITZY) and KASS (NMIXX, GOT7, ITZY), with choreography from Yang Wook of Nana Company, who coached the hit variety project SSAK3. The styling tracks the group's evolution across two eras of K-pop fashion, from bright, boxy first-album uniforms to a colder, metallic Y2K second act. The retro-style music video for Triangle's debut single, "Love is," drew more than 2.8M views on YouTube ahead of the film's release.
"Making comedy films helps me view the world with a bit more ease," says director Son Jae-gon ( My Scary Girl , Secret Zoo ), who hopes audiences feel the same. "Wild characters go through wild struggles and sing wildly. I hope you enjoy watching Wild Sing and laugh, then find yourself singing to yourself."
Wild Sing will stream with subtitles in 32 languages and dubbed in 15 languages. The film comes to Netflix worldwide on July 31.
