Burn ban in place for Norman and entire county

February 18, 2026

Ban in effect through March 3, 2026

A county-wide burn ban is in place for Cleveland County, that will be in effect through March 3, 2026.

Under the ban:

  • All fires, campfires, bonfires and the burning of trash or other materials is prohibited;
  • Enforcement may be carried out by any law enforcement officer in the state. Violators could be subject to fine and/or imprisonment;
  • Outdoor cooking approved appliances is permissible with due caution.

Information on wildfire preparedness, including how to safeguard your residence, is available online through the National Fire Protection Association and through the National Weather Service. Taking measures such as disposing of heavy accumulations of debris around property, cleaning roofs and gutters of dead leaves, or moving flammable materials away from wall exteriors are advised.

In addition to preparedness planning, residents can help prevent wildfires by ensuring trailer safety chains are properly secured while towing, properly discarding smoking materials, and avoiding power equipment that creates sparks.

Daily, information about local burning status is shared to the City of Norman website, alongside other helpful tips, instruction and reminders.

"With current conditions, this burn ban is absolutely necessary to help protect life and property," said Deputy Chief Joel Chesser. "We encourage the public to take measures of preparedness now and remain situationally aware during this time. The Norman Fire Department continues to monitor conditions and stands ready to respond as needed."

Residents can enroll in emergency alerts from the City of Norman at no cost - via call, text or email - at Normanok.gov/AlertNorman.
