By Andrea O'Neill '06For Christina Englert '08, each visit back to Commonwealth University not only allows her to find the best talent for Commonwealth Charter Academy, but also share in the excitement of students' new beginnings and next steps.
Once she became Talent Acquisition and Retention Team Lead for CCA, Englert began attending the Career Connections Expo for Education to connect with students preparing to launch their teaching careers. CCA is one of Pennsylvania's largest public cyber charter schools, serving more than 20,000 students statewide. With its flexible, family-focused approach to learning, the academy offers a unique alternative to traditional education-something Englert is always eager to share with curious students.
"We are unique in what we can offer to our students and families," explained Englert. "There is a great amount of flexibility for our families, which is the number 1 reason why they choose us. I really enjoy seeing their faces light up to learn about another way of providing instruction to students with such innovative techniques."
Englert was impressed with the students she met, particularly how they presented themselves and their eagerness to learn about the organizations that may have held the key to their professional start.
"So many of the students were extremely professional, giving a handshake, making eye contact when speaking with them, asking great questions," explained Englert who added that such small gestures go a long way with potential employers.
Englert, who changed her major during her time at Lock Haven, says she felt supported through the academic process and confident in her skillset once she entered the workforce. One thing she did not know, however, that she now tries to impart on current students, is the value of networking.
"I wish I had…been more involved on campus," recalled Englert. "The more you get your name out and meet people, the more you will set yourself up for success. Networking and getting your name out can really posture you for doors to open and potential for multiple opportunities."
Englert highly recommends the Career Connections Expos at Commonwealth to any employer who seeks to interact with students and recruit for their company.
"Not only are the staff so accommodating and hospitable, but there is always a very fruitful turnout of students. It is a wonderful opportunity to share details about the culture of your organization and current employment opportunities."
