WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Susan Collins issued the following statement in response to the passing of Neal Williams, a Vietnam War veteran and longtime leader in Maine's veteran community:

"A decorated Vietnam veteran, Neal Williams served our nation with courage and distinction, earning two Purple Hearts and two Army Commendation Medals. Through his leadership of the Maine Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Neal devoted his life to service, both to his country and to his fellow veterans. I so enjoyed my meetings with Neal, as few people in Maine had greater knowledge of and commitment to our state's veterans.

"I am terribly saddened to learn of his passing and my thoughts are with his wife Jeanna, their children, and grandchildren during this difficult time."
