Congresswoman Tenney Celebrates Fort Drum Selection for Army Janus Nuclear Energy Program

Oswego, NY - Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) celebrated the U.S. Army's selection of Fort Drum as one of five initial installations for the Janus Program, bringing advanced nuclear energy technology to Upstate New York to strengthen Fort Drum's energy security and mission readiness.

The Janus Program is the Army's next generation nuclear power initiative designed to provide secure, resilient, and reliable energy for defense installations and critical military missions. Through the program, Fort Drum was selected to receive a 1-megawatt commercial microreactor developed by Westinghouse Government Services. The Army is partnering with the Defense Innovation Unit and private industry to invest $2.2 billion for private sector companies to own, construct, and deploy commercially viable microreactors while accelerating the development of advanced American nuclear technology. As one of the five selected sites, the project will provide Fort Drum with a dedicated source of reliable power and strengthen the installation's energy resilience following the closure of its previous biomass power facility.

This investment will help create a pathway towards commercially viable microreactors, with Fort Drum being one of the first recipients of this new transformative technology that can help provide much-needed baseload power. This selection marks an important investment in Fort Drum, the 10th Mountain Division, and Upstate New York, and I look forward to seeing Project Janus advance the future of American nuclear energy."
