Cowering under pressure from Donald Trump, Senate Republicans today reversed themselves and killed the war powers resolution to block Trump's unconstitutional military actions in Venezuela without congressional authorization.
Just last week, the Senate advanced the bipartisan measure after five Republicans voted with Democrats. Now, Senate Republican leaders are refusing to even hold a final vote on the resolution.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
"Donald Trump campaigned on the promise to end endless wars, but instead, he's 'running' Venezuela and threatening additional interventions in more countries around the world. Just last week, a handful of Senate Republicans were clear about putting guardrails on Trump. But after a few calls from their Dear Leader, Republicans folded - killing a bipartisan resolution to rein in Trump's unconstitutional power grab. Americans have been unequivocal in their opposition to the U.S. indefinitely running a foreign country. Republicans had a chance to stand up for the American people, and instead they chose to cower to Trump."
Trump's own chief of staff, Susie Wiles, said in an interview that if Trump "were to authorize some activity on land, then it's war, then [we'd need] Congress." According to a new poll, over 60% of Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of foreign policy, and a majority - including nearly 1-in-5 Republicans - believe Trump has gone too far in military intervention abroad. While Americans continue to grapple with high prices and the rising cost of living, Trump said that the U.S. could run Venezuela for years - enriching the oil corporations that he admitted just last week would take the profits.
