Montana State to host lecture by former Marine officer Stuart Scheller

BOZEMAN - Stuart Scheller, a former U.S. Marine lieutenant colonel who was discharged and imprisoned after criticizing American military leadership in Afghanistan, will speak at Montana State University at a lecture hosted by MSU's Veterans Services.

The lecture, titled "Courageous Leadership," will occur from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, in Inspiration Hall located in MSU's Norm Asbjornson Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public, though registration is required. Register online at montana.edu/calendar/event/51737.

Scheller, who is the author of "Crisis of Command: How We Lost Trust and Confidence in America's Generals and Politicians,"will discuss the decisions made at the National Security Council leading to the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the video he posted as a commissioned officer asking for accountability from his senior leaders. This video went against the military's Uniform Code of Military Justice. As a result, Scheller was relieved of command, tried for violating multiple articles and subsequently imprisoned.

"Standing up for what one feels is right, even in the face of potential job loss, defines true character," said Todd Bucher, director of Veterans Services at MSU. "It is in these moments of courage that we not only honor our values but inspire others to do the same. The cost of silence can be far greater than the risk of speaking out."

Located in Romney Hall, MSU's Travis W. Atkins Veteran Support Center is a dedicated space for student veterans. It houses the Office of Veteran Services and is a place for MSU student-veterans to get support, study and build community.

Bucher said the evening will offer insight into the importance of accountability in leadership and command.
