Council to consider renaming March 31 holiday

March 23, 2026

Tempe, AZ - Renaming March 31, 2026, as a one-time Day of Recognition for Women Farmworkers is on the agenda for this Thursday's Tempe City Council Regular Meeting.

Tempe's Six-Sided Partnership, which is comprised of representatives from city management and labor groups, recommended this as a temporary name to replace the Cesar Chavez Day holiday. The groups wanted to honor those women who were part of the movement that changed the lives of so many farmworkers. Their efforts led to better quality of life for them, as well as for employees in other professions. They also wanted to recognize the trauma that some have suffered.

The Six-Sided Partnership includes representatives of United Arizona Employees Association; Tempe Officers Association; Tempe Supervisors Association; International Association of Fire Fighters; Confidential Employees and the Senior Management Team.

The Six-Sided Partnership will meet later in the year to discuss recommending a permanent name and date for the paid holiday. Their recommendation will go to Tempe City Council for consideration at a future Council meeting. The March 31 holiday is part of Tempe's employee personnel rules and Memorandums of Understanding with employee groups.
