Portales, NM - October 30, 2025 - The Golden Library Archives and Special Collections at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) have loaned items from the Leigh Brackett Collection to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in California for use in their upcoming exhibit titled: "Screenwriting: Takes on L.A. Noir."
Leigh Brackett, who earned screenwriting credits for movies such as "Rio Bravo," "El Dorado," "Rio Lobo," "The Long Goodbye," and "The Empire Strikes Back," donated her papers, including drafts, correspondence, contracts, and other miscellaneous materials related to her professional career, to ENMU in the 1970s.
She was a longtime friend of the legendary science fiction writer and Eastern New Mexico University alumnus and professor, Jack Williamson, when she donated her items to ENMU. These items include an original draft of what later became the screenplay for "The Empire Strikes Back."
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures specifically requested items related to her writing of "The Long Goodbye" to be added to their exhibit.
"It's a tremendous honor for the ENMU Golden Library Archives and Special Collections to have items on display at the prestigious Academy Museum," said Laura Wright, director of the Golden Library. "Our collection of science fiction materials truly has something for everyone and is open for public use."
The exhibit will run in Los Angeles, CA, from December 13, 2025, to January 10, 2027. For more information on the exhibit and the museum, visit www.academymuseum.org.
